About Kazuo Umezu

Umezu Kazuo (楳図 かずお; UMEZU KAZUO) Born on September 3, 1936 (now 85 years old)


At the young age of 14, he already had an immense passion for creating comics, and in 1955 he began publishing rental comics in Osaka.


In 1956, he published his first horror work "The Bottomless Town", and his famous works "The Drifting Classroom" and "Cat-Eyed Monk" became famous.


In 1975, his works such as "Drifting Classroom" won the 20th Shogakukan Manga Award.


A legendary figure in the Japanese horror comics world, although he is famous for his horror and thriller comics, his content explores human nature, reveals the dark side of human nature, and expounds on many different concepts.


As the first generation god of horror comics, he influenced many later horror comics authors, including Junji Ito, Shoko Nakagawa, Miyako Kojima, Shoko Hiyodori, and many other up-and-coming talents.

(Off topic: Among the newcomers who participated in the first Umezu Award was Junji Ito, who won the first place title by defeating other top performers with his debut work "Tomie".)

Kazuo Umezu's current activities


After "14 Years Old", it has been 27 years and it took Kazuo Umezu 4 years to officially announce the launch of his new work "ZOKU-SHINGO Small Robo Port Shingo Museum". The paintings consist of 101 color paintings and are displayed side by side in the museum. Each painting has a title and description. Visiting them in order is like reading a large picture book. The painting is about a parallel world of "I Am Zhenwu", a classic work with artificial intelligence as its theme. It tells the story of an artificial intelligence with emotions and autonomous consciousness who wants to become a human being, and explores the impact of technological progress on human life.
